Even more Leeds Building Society colleagues now volunteering in their communities

Throughout 2019, 898 colleagues at Leeds Building Society’s branches and offices volunteered to support more than 306 separate activities across the UK. In the Yorkshire and Humber region, this included volunteering with St Gemma’s Hospice, Harrogate Easier Living Project, Leeds South and East Food Bank, Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, Barnsley Hospice, and Light Night Leeds – as well as a number of schools and young persons’ groups across the many diverse communities served by the Society.

In June 2019, Leeds Building Society surpassed the targets it set for volunteering two years ahead of schedule, and the programme was extended to give colleagues additional time to support the Society’s national partnerships – Samaritans and parkrun.

Luke Wellock, Corporate Responsibility Manager at Leeds Building Society, used his volunteer time to help a school link its curriculum with real-life business scenarios. Luke said: “It’s very encouraging to see that more colleagues than ever are choosing to help out in our communities across the UK, and 2019 has witnessed a number of new and inspiring activities being supported.

“Volunteering is a rewarding experience both for our colleagues and the numerous groups they’re helping out, particularly those smaller ones who often have limited resources.

“As an organisation founded on the principle of people helping people, Leeds Building Society is leading by example when it comes to doing business responsibly, and we can all be very proud of what our volunteers have achieved in 2019. I know a lot of people are already excited about helping out again – or indeed for the first time – this year, and I’m looking forward to seeing even more great causes benefitting from our time and effort.”

Colleagues volunteering in 2020 can also look forward to sporting one of Leeds Building Society’s new eco-friendly T-shirts, which are made from 100% organic cotton, are fully traceable, and are ethically-sourced from plastic-free factories.
