Pulling together to clean up in Barkerend

The area around Pollard Park and Brookfield Road received a spruce up last week as local residents, employees from Incommunities, and Bradford Council joined forces to pick litter, remove graffiti, and share information about recycling.

During the clean-up, the team collected over 30 bin bags of rubbish and more than three tonnes of bulk waste from the area in Barkerend.

Speaking of the clean-up, local resident Janet Jones said: “I really appreciate everyone coming out and giving up their time to clean up the area.

“I have lived on this estate for 39 years; I have lovely neighbours and it’s such a handy location. The community clean-up is a great example of people pulling together, I just wish there was more of it.”

The event was part of four planned ‘Days of Action’ being organised by Incommunities over the next two months, in a bid to get local people and employees from all departments at the housing provider working together to make a difference in the community.

The Pollard Park event was organised by Israr Mohammed, who is the Incommunities Neighbourhood Housing Officer for the area.

Israr said: “I’m really pleased with how the day went, it was a great turnout and showed partnership working across Incommunities departments, along with Bradford Council’s recycling team, and of course local residents.

“By working together, we managed to clean the whole area of bulky waste, cut back overgrown trees and shrubs, remove graffiti, and carry out general litter picking.

“We also spoke to residents on the day to explain what we were trying to achieve. All in all, a job well done. I would like to thank all those who were involved on the day for their time and effort.”

The remaining ‘Days of Action’ are on:

  • Wednesday 6th September, 9am to 3pm, at Newtown Close Keighley BD21 2PF.
  • Thursday 28th September, 9am to 1.30pm, at The Parade, Broadstone Way, Holmewood, BD4 9NH.
  • Thursday 5th October 2023, 9.30am, at Nottingham Street car park, Thornbury.

Residents who come out to help will be provided with litter pickers, bags, and gloves.

Incommunities would like to see as many people as possible joining in to help make a difference in their local community.
