Safer streets and improved security for Fagley residents

As part of a national crime prevention initiative, residents on the Fagley estate in Bradford have seen £550,000 spent on reducing burglaries, vehicle crime and other theft-based offences. The measures follow a successful joint bid to the government’s Safer Streets Fund, involving West Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner’s Office, West Yorkshire Police, Bradford Community Safety Partnership and Incommunities.

The recently completed project includes the installation of more than two kilometres of perimeter fencing to deter people from accessing private gardens and improve security. Street lighting has been increased and improved, as well as home security measures installed.

Replacement door locks have been fitted and window security improved for dwellings which have suffered repeat crimes, or streets which have suffered persistent crime. In open spaces, vehicle barriers have been installed to help prevent fly tipping of waste.

In addition to physical security measures, Bradford Council led a programme of resident engagement events including youth outreach sessions, estate walkabouts and sports and craft activity days.

The sessions provided a variety of opportunities to speak with residents about their local community and ideas for improvement.
