Bradford graduate celebrates student success with own academy

Azhar Ishfaq says he always knew he wanted to be a teacher. He graduated from the University of Bradford with a 2.1 in biomedical science in 2008 and went on to work for a number of local schools.

In 2018, he finally realised his long-held ambition of opening his own academy – Prosper Academy on Little Horton Road, Bradford – where he delivers tuition to around 50 students aged between 12 and 16.

“I have always been interested in science and I think today those subjects are more important than ever. Science helped build the world around us, so the more we can do to get young people interested in science, the better.”

Azhar has enjoyed a string of successes with his teaching techniques. He says most students receive between one and three hours of tuition a week in biology, chemistry, physics, English and maths. His academy boasts its own science labs, plus ‘chill out’ zones complete with games, including a pool table.

“Our teaching method requires only one hour of class per week. We use flashcards and various techniques to help students with their school work. I am proud to say that some of our students have opted to study triple science at school due to the motivation they acquired here. Many others have gone on to study degrees in fields such as Optometry, Dentistry, and Medicine at notable Universities.”

He added: “We aim to do more than just teach children. We want to motivate and empower them, instilling in them a passion for learning and confidence in their ability to succeed. Ultimately, we’re equipping them with the skills they need for a successful career in science, which will undoubtedly provide them with greater security in the future.”
